HPE OfficeConnect 1820 24G Managed Switch

The HPE 1820 Switch Series provides flexible, easy-to-manage Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2 switching for smaller organizations that need lower total cost of ownership and improved network performance. These smart-managed, fixed-configuration switches include energy-saving features and a web browser-based GUI for simple configuration. Some models support fiber connectivity via SFP ports and several are fanless for quiet office use.

Advantages

The series offers a simple web management interface suitable for non-technical users, multiple rack-mountable models including non-PoE and PoE-capable options, and flexible installation choices (wall, under-desk or desktop). Energy-saving technologies such as Energy Efficient Ethernet, idle-port power down and PoE port scheduling help reduce power consumption. Traffic prioritization and QoS features ensure time-sensitive services like VoIP and video get priority.

Key specifications

• Layer: Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2 smart-managed switches
• Management: Web browser-based GUI with enhanced navigation
• Models: Six rack-mountable models, including three non-PoE variants
• Ports: Models with 8 ports and other configurations; some include SFP ports for fiber
• PoE: Selected models support Power over Ethernet; 8-port model can be powered by upstream PoE
• Energy features: Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE), idle-port power down, PoE Port Scheduler
• QoS: DSCP and IEEE 802.1p classification, eight hardware queues
• Layer 2 features: VLANs, Spanning Tree (RSTP), Link aggregation, IGMP Snooping
• Broadcast control: Rate limiting of broadcast traffic
• Design: Some fanless models for quiet operation

How to use

Install the switch in the chosen location — rack, wall, under-desk or on a desktop — and connect Ethernet or SFP fiber links to the appropriate ports. For basic operation the switches are plug-and-play; use the web browser-based GUI to perform additional configuration such as VLAN setup, link aggregation, QoS policies and PoE scheduling. Apply Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and IGMP Snooping where required for loop prevention and multicast handling. Monitor and adjust bandwidth and broadcast limits via the management interface as needed.

Recommendations

Choose a PoE-capable model if you need to power IP phones or wireless access points; select a fanless model for quiet office environments. Use the web GUI to enable QoS and DSCP policies when deploying voice or video services to ensure consistent performance.
