How to choose the right motherboard
Socket and processor compatibility
AM5 is the socket for AMD Ryzen 7000/9000; LGA 1700 for 12th–14th generation Intel; LGA 1851 for Intel Core Ultra 200. The wrong socket is a hard incompatibility — check this first.
Form factor
Micro-ATX suits compact cases; ATX is the all-rounder with more expansion slots; E-ATX and Extended-ATX offer maximum PCIe lanes, M.2 slots and power phases for enthusiasts and workstations.
Chipset and features
A620 and B650 are excellent for mainstream builds; X870E and Z890 enable full DDR5 bandwidth, PCIe 5.0 for NVMe SSDs and CPU overclocking right up to the processor's limits.
Connectivity and networking
Flagship boards offer Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and up to 10 Gb Ethernet. Check the USB layout on the rear I/O panel, the number of M.2 slots and the front-panel headers — these details are just as important as the price.

Important note: DDR5 and DDR4 slots are physically different — a DDR5 board will not accept DDR4 memory. Before buying RAM, always check the memory type, maximum clock speed and XMP/EXPO profile support of your chosen board.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for a new build in 2025 — AM5 or LGA 1851?
Both platforms are current with PCIe 5.0 and DDR5. AM5 (AMD Ryzen 7000/9000) offers a longer upgrade path thanks to AMD's multi-generation socket commitment. LGA 1851 (Intel Core Ultra 200) is stronger in lightly threaded tasks. Decide based on the specific CPU model you want to use.
Do I need an X870E or Z890 board, or is B650/B760 enough?
For gaming and everyday use, B650 or B760 offers excellent value for money — full DDR5 support, PCIe 5.0 on the first M.2 slot and solid VRM stages. X870E or Z890 are only worth it if you want to overclock an unlocked CPU or need several PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots or 10 Gb LAN.
Can I use an old CPU cooler on a new AM5 or LGA 1851 board?
LGA 1851 uses the same physical mounting as LGA 1700, so most modern Intel coolers are directly compatible. AM5 uses a new bracket, but many manufacturers offer AM5 adapters free of charge. Check your cooler's TDP rating — flagship CPUs draw more watts.
