How to choose the right PCIe network card

Speed & protocol
Match the card to your switch fabric: 1GbE for the office, 10/25GbE for storage and virtualisation, 100/200GbE for spine aggregation, 400–800GbE InfiniBand for HPC and AI clusters.
PCIe generation & slot width
High-performance NICs (100GbE+) need PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 x8/x16 slots to deliver their full bandwidth. Before ordering, check that your server supports the required PCIe generation.
Single-port or multi-port card
Dual-port NICs allow bonding, failover and the separation of storage and management traffic on a single card.
NIC or DPU (SmartNIC)?
Standard NICs only offload checksums and segmentation. BlueField-3 DPUs add an ARM processor complex for full NFV, encryption and storage offload, freeing up host CPU cycles.

What is a DPU and how does it differ from a standard NIC?
A data processing unit (DPU), such as the NVIDIA BlueField-3, combines a high-speed network adapter with an embedded ARM processor complex. Unlike a standard NIC, a DPU can offload entire network functions, such as encryption, storage protocols and firewalling, freeing up host CPU resources.
Do I need a PCIe 5.0 slot for a 400GbE or 800GbE card?
Yes. The NVIDIA ConnectX-8 C8180 (800 Gb InfiniBand) uses PCIe 6.0 x16, and the ConnectX-7 (400GbE) uses PCIe 5.0 x16. A slot of an older generation reduces the available bandwidth and can affect latency in HPC workloads.
Can I use a server NIC in a desktop PC or workstation?
Yes, provided the slot width and PCIe generation are compatible. Server NICs usually need vendor drivers, run hotter than consumer adapters, and some OCP/HHHL form factors only fit certain server chassis.
