How to choose the right thermal paste or thermal pad
Thermal conductivity
Higher W/m·K values mean better heat transfer: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (~12 W/m·K) and Minus Pad Extreme (17.8 W/m·K) lead the field; ARCTIC MX-6 (~12.5 W/m·K) offers excellent value for money.
Paste or pad?
Thermal paste fills microscopic irregularities between the CPU and the heatsink. Thermal pads are solid layers for areas with a physical gap — VRM coolers, M.2 SSDs, GPU memory chips.
Quantity & application
A 1 g syringe is enough for 3–5 CPU applications; bulk containers (e.g. PROLIMATECH PK-Zero, 600 g) are designed for workshops and server operations. Thermal pads are cut to the required size and thickness.
Operating temperature range
Alphacool Apex pads are rated for –50 °C to +150 °C — suitable for automotive electronics, industrial controllers and extreme overclocking environments well beyond normal PC use.

Application tip: Before re-applying, clean the CPU IHS and the cooler base with isopropyl alcohol (90%+). A pea-sized drop in the centre spreads evenly when the cooler is pressed down — spreading it by hand is not necessary. Cut thermal pads precisely to the size of the component and apply them without air bubbles.
Frequently asked questions
How often should thermal paste be replaced?
On most systems, replacing it every 2–4 years is advisable. Premium pastes such as Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut last longer. One sign that a change is due: CPU temperatures rise 5–10 °C above their usual level.
What is the difference between thermal paste and a thermal pad?
Thermal paste is a semi-liquid compound that fills microscopic gaps between flat surfaces. Thermal pads are solid, flexible layers for physical gaps — GPU VRAM chips, M.2 SSD coolers or VRM components.
Can I use CPU thermal paste on the GPU too?
Yes — CPU compounds also work on GPU dies. For GPU VRAM and VRM chips, you should use thermal pads (not paste) of the right chip height. Check the pad thickness before ordering — the wrong thickness reduces contact pressure.
