Choosing the right VoIP gateway or router
Interface type
FXS ports for analogue phones, FXO for PSTN lines, E1/T1/PRI for digital exchange lines and pure eSBC models for SIP-to-SIP connections between networks.
Simultaneous calls
Small-office devices support 4–8 simultaneous sessions; the Patton SmartNode and AudioCodes Mediant series cover dozens to hundreds of channels.
Voice codecs
Check that the gateway supports the codecs of your PBX: G.711, G.729, G.722 or Opus. Broader codec support reduces the transcoding load and safeguards voice quality.
QoS and security
On shared internet connections, QoS prioritisation (DSCP), GigE uplinks and TLS/SRTP encryption are essential to protect SIP traffic from fraud.

Installation note: Always assign the gateway a static IP address and enable SRTP and TLS encryption — unprotected SIP traffic is a common entry point for toll fraud.
FAQ on VoIP gateways and routers
What is the difference between a VoIP gateway and a session border controller?
A VoIP gateway converts analogue or ISDN signals into SIP. A session border controller (eSBC) operates purely in the IP domain and acts as a security and interoperability proxy between two SIP networks — e.g. between a cloud UCaaS platform and your on-premises PBX.
Can I connect an older PBX to a cloud telephone system?
Yes. A gateway with the right number of interfaces (FXS/FXO or E1/T1) registers your extensions or exchange lines as SIP endpoints on the cloud platform — your existing handsets and internal numbering plan are retained.
How many FXS ports do I need?
One FXS port per analogue endpoint (phone, fax, alarm system). Common configurations: 4, 8, 16 or 24 ports. For larger sites, E1/T1 gateways with up to 30 channels per port are recommended.
