How to choose the right jigsaw
Power source
Cordless jigsaws (18–20 V) give you complete freedom of movement on site; mains-powered models are ideal for sustained heavy-duty work in the workshop without changing batteries.
Cutting depth
For wood, 80–100 mm is generally enough, and for aluminium 10–20 mm. Check both figures before buying, especially if you will be working with metal or thick boards.
Stroke rate and speed control
A higher no-load stroke rate (up to 3,500 strokes/min) allows faster sawing; variable speed control lets you work gently in plastic or aluminium.
Handle shape
The D-handle sits close to the blade and allows precise curve cutting; the bow handle offers more leverage for straight cuts in thick wood.

Blade compatibility: Most modern jigsaws use T-shank blades (the universal standard). Some older Bosch and Black & Decker models use U-shank — always check the shank type before ordering replacement blades.
Frequently asked questions about jigsaws
Can you cut aluminium with a jigsaw?
Yes — check the cutting depth in aluminium (typically 10–20 mm). Use a fine-toothed metal-cutting blade, set a low speed and add a drop of cutting oil for a clean edge.
What is orbital action and do I need it?
Orbital action moves the blade in an elliptical path, removing wood faster as it cuts. It is ideal for rough cuts in thick wood, but should be switched off for metal or fine curved cuts.
Is a cordless jigsaw as powerful as a mains-powered one?
Modern 18 V brushless models from Makita, DeWALT and Bosch match the performance of mains-powered tools for most site tasks. Mains-powered models still have advantages for sustained heavy cutting without battery management.
